Bay Shore is a hamlet in the Town of Islip, on Long Island's South Shore along the Great South Bay. The Southern State Parkway marks its northern edge, and the village of Brightwaters sits just west of it, between Bay Shore and West Bay Shore.

Main Street is the downtown, a long stretch of restaurants, boutiques, shops, and offices, brought back with new sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping, and restored parks. Toward the water, the Bay Shore Marina sits on the Great South Bay with Benjamin Beach right beside it. At the southern end of Maple Avenue, ferries leave for Fire Island communities including Ocean Beach, Saltaire, and Kismet.

Bay Shore's housing reflects how it grew. Older homes stand on the streets near Main Street and the bay, and neighborhoods of postwar homes were built on former farms and woodlands. Townhouses and condominiums have gone up on the grounds of old estates, and newer condominiums stand next to the train station. That range means two homes a short walk apart can price very differently, so we compare each house with its own kind.

The Bay Shore station is on the Montauk Branch of the LIRR and is a popular stop for Fire Island, with the ferry terminals just south of it. Montauk Highway runs through town as Main Street, Union Boulevard and Sunrise Highway cross it further north, and the Southern State Parkway runs along its northern edge.
