Islip is a hamlet in the Town of Islip, on Long Island's South Shore, and it shares its name with the town. It sits on the north side of the Great South Bay, across the water from Fire Island, with Bay Shore next door to the west.

Main Street is the downtown, a shopping district of gift shops, boutiques, restaurants, and pubs that hosts a festival each spring and a holiday house tour. Down by the bay, the hamlet has its own public bathing beach, run by the town, and the Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge sits at its southeastern corner. Boating is a big part of the waterfront, with Fire Island just across the bay.

Islip's housing has deep roots. Queen Anne Revival homes and other older houses line many streets, and some of the old mansions remain beside newer, larger homes. At Bayberry Point, a small cluster of streets separated by canals runs out to the bay, where several Moorish style houses built for the original development still stand, most of them renovated since. Capes, ranches, and colonials fill the side streets. With historic and waterfront homes, we look closely at age, systems, and flood zone questions before we price them.

The Islip station is on the Montauk Branch of the LIRR, and the Fire Island ferries leave from neighboring Bay Shore. By car, Montauk Highway runs through the hamlet as Main Street, Sunrise Highway, Union Boulevard, and the Heckscher State Parkway cross it, and Islip Avenue heads north from Main Street.
